The Australian Sports Brain Bank is the repository of dozens of brains donated by the families of deceased former athletes.
Its mission is to investigate potential causes of neurodegeneration in the brains of these athletes, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
At its lab, based at Sydney University’s Brain and Mind Centre, the ASBB’s neuroscientists prime specimens for microscopic study and analysing changes in brain structure – because with existing imaging technology unable to show such changes, it’s only under the microscope can these potentially devastating changes be seen.
