Moon-forming disc detected around another world

A distant ring of gas and dust offers new clues about solar system formation.

Two pixellated images: on the left is a red circumstellar ring around an infant star, and on the right is a close up showing the red dot of the planet and its own smaller disc.
This image, taken ALMA, shows wide (left) and close-up (right) views of the moon-forming disc surrounding PDS 70c; the distinct ring on the left is the circumstellar disc around the star. Credit: ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)/Benisty et al.
